Also, he is the Founder and Director of R7K Research & Conveyance, a company specializing in software and organization design. Prior to forming R7K, Michael was the Chief Scientist of Obtiva and a consultant with Object Mentor International. Over the past 20 years he has consulted with hundreds of organizations, supporting them with general software design issues, process change and code revitalization. He is a frequent presenter at national and international conferences. He was involved in the early Agile movement and one of his passions is helping organizations recognize the impact of their internal organization and communication on the long term viability of their software products – putting interactions in place to prevent the accumulation of technical debt and lost business opportunities. His goal is to make software development more effective and integrated with business concerns. His main specialties are software development practices, TDD, Refactoring, Legacy Code Revitalization and team dynamics.
  • Mark Richards – an experienced, hands-on software architect involved in the architecture, design, and implementation of microservices architectures, service-oriented architectures, and distributed systems. He has significant experience and expertise in application, integration, and enterprise architecture. Mark is the founder of DeveloperToArchitect.com, a free resource website devoted to helping developers in the journey to software architect. He is the author of numerous technical books and videos from O’Reilly, including several books on Microservices, the Software Architecture Fundamentals video series, Enterprise Messaging video series, Java Message Service, 2nd Edition, and a contributing author to 97 Things Every Software Architect Should Know.
  • George Fairbanks – author of the book Just Enough Software Architecture. Also, he is a software developer, consultant and speaker. He has publications on frameworks and software architecture in selective academic conferences, including OOPSLA and ICSE. He’s currently a software engineer at Google. He’s been a program committee member for the Working International Conference on Software Architecture (WICSA), the International Conference on Software Maintenance (ICSM), and the European Conference on Software Architecture (ECSA).
  • Dave Farley – a thought-leader in the field of Continuous Delivery, DevOps and Software Development in general. He is co-author of the Jolt-award winning book ‘Continuous Delivery’, a regular conference speaker and blogger and one of the authors of the Reactive Manifesto. He started working in large scale distributed systems more than 25 years ago, doing research into the development of loose-coupled, message-based systems – a forerunner of MicroService architectures. Dave has a wide range of experience leading the development of complex software in teams, both large and small, in the UK and USA. Dave was an early adopter of agile development techniques, employing iterative development, continuous integration and significant levels of automated testing on commercial projects. Dave is now an independent software developer and consultant, and founder and director of Continuous Delivery Ltd.

Debates and Talks of the Global Software Architecture Summit 2019

Attendees at this first edition of the Global Software Architecture Summit enjoyed 4 presentations and 4 debates. The talks were carried out by authentic first swords of the software architecture: George Fairbanks began the day with his talk “Code is your partner in thought”, in which he shared his reflections on continuous design, legacy code and more. It was followed by Len Bass, one of the great pioneers of software architecture, with his presentation on the principles, processes and tools that every good software architect should know. Mark Richards made a dissertation on “thinking like an architect” which was one of the most favourite talks of the day, and Ian Gorton shared the analysis of the results of several cloud and evolutionary architecture experiments he conducted with a group of his students.

As for the debates, the first one was starring Ian Gorton, Eoin Woods and Michael Feathers, who discussed the evolution of software architecture. The debate was moderated by Álvaro García – principal engineer at Apiumhub, who also guided the debate on effective architecture practices, in which Eoin Woods, Sandro Mancuso, George Fairbanks, Juan Manuel Serrano and Carlos Blé participated. Jakub Marchwicki took over as moderator in the debate between David Farley, Mark Richards, Len Bass and Christian Ciceri on reactive architecture patterns, and the day ended with a discussion about choosing the right style of architecture, regulated by Christian Cotes and that It was attended by Viktor Farcic, Ana-Maria Mihalceanu and Álex Soto.

Sponsors and Organizers, those ones responsible for this success

Behind this ambitious project we find several sponsors and organizers, without a doubt the main player was Apiumhub, which started this initiative and organized the whole event. The idea of holding a summit on software architecture was born from its CEO and founder, Evgeny Predein, since this is precisely one of the main strengths of Apiumhub. Apium Academy was another crucial player in this event, being a gold sponsor and organizer of practical workshops with the speakers. This academy of courses and programming workshops has already created a couple of workshops with some of the speakers of this edition of the GSAS, and they already have some more on the way.

Autentia, one of the four bronze sponsors of the event, was responsible for filming the talks and debates, interviewing the main speakers. Docplanner, Farfetch and ekon were the other sponsors who supported this event and made it possible, although they were not the only ones; media and entities such as the Cercle Tecnològic de Catalunya, Barcelona Tech City, Women Techmakers, Comunicae, Wwwhat’s new, Appfutura, Tech Sales, Newsline, TyN magazine, Coding Sans, Smart Catalonia, Scala Madrid, Women Techmakers, Barcelona .Net Core, Women Who Code, Barcelona Tech City, Domain-Driven Design Barcelona put their grain of sand to make this first edition of the Global Software Architecture Summit a success.

Global Software Architecture Summit 2019: Conclusions

After a long day, software architects could not miss the beers time and that’s where feedback began to be collected to make the next edition of the GSAS even better. Feedback was very positive and the idea is to make the second edition of GSAS bigger and even more practical, having two days of workshops and talks.
