Identity is Security: Don’t Blink

If you blink, you might miss the next privacy regulation being passed. That was definitely the case this week as we saw the privacy law movement in New York with the New York Privacy Act. In terms of scope, it seems to rival the landmark California Consumer Protection Act, and people are waiting with bated breath to see if it passes before New York’s legislative session closes on June 19th.  This is a clear indicator that we’ll surely see more regulations like CCPA and now the New York Privacy Act sweep the states as the need for proper oversight rises with every breach that hits the headlines.

Next in line is the latest governmental cybersecurity program to surface. The State Department issued a new plan to reestablish a cybersecurity focused bureau. By the numbers, it will have about 80 staff members and a budget of more than $20 million. This has been in talks for some time now, so we will see how it all unfolds.

We also took a look at ISACA’s State of Cybersecurity study out this week. They found that the “top three threat actors remain cyber criminals, hackers and non-malicious insiders.” That hasn’t really changed over the past few years. Still, the number of cyberattacks and data breaches continue to pummel businesses, and the report points out that those are still widely underreported.

And finally, we’re ending on a fun note this week. We are a proud sponsor Robert Megennis, who is driving the cybersecurity racecar in the Indy Lights campaign. He had an impressive month last month, and you can check out his recap below.

With that, we leave you to finish out your week. As for us, the Navigate ’19 countdown is almost up and we are putting the finishing touches on our biggest event of the year. Follow along next week on the blog and the #SPNav19 hashtag to get a peek into the identity governance conference!”
