We’re excited to announce that we will be accepting applications for our next cohort of software engineer apprentices starting Monday, October 26!
Tandem’s Apprenticeship Program for software engineers is geared towards individuals who have no prior professional experience as a programmer, but may have gone through a code school, completed a degree program, or self-taught themselves the fundamentals. Our objective is to help our apprentices grow their basic knowledge into the skills they need to be a full-fledged contributor to our team of software consultants. Apprenticeship positions are full-time, salaried, and include health insurance and other benefits.

The Code Challenge and Application
The application period for our engineering apprenticeship opens on Monday, October 26 at 9:00 AM CDT.
We will accept applications for seven days, and the application period will close on Sunday, November 1 at 11:59 PM CST. Unfortunately, applications submitted after this time will not be considered, so please give yourself as much time as you need before the deadline to complete the challenge and submit your application.
In the application, there will be six questions to help us learn about you, as well as a code challenge prompt. In your application, thoughtfully answer all of the questions and include a link to your completed code challenge submission.
We aren’t sharing the code challenge prompt until the application period opens, but familiarity with the following concepts will be helpful for completing the challenge:
- Arrays and loops
- Data manipulation
- Parsing JSON
We encourage you to put your code challenge in Github, Bitbucket, or a public source control service of your choosing and include a link to your repository in your application.
Apprenticeship Interview Process
Our engineering apprenticeship interviews follow a 3-step process:
1. Application and code challenge submission
Fill out our application form and submit a solution to our code challenge. We will review every application and code challenge, then invite semi-finalist candidates to move on to the next step.
2. Code challenge review interview
In this one-hour video call, our semi-finalists will meet with one or two of our engineers to talk through your problem-solving approach to the code challenge.
3. Pairing interview
During the last step in our process, finalist candidates will do a pairing interview via Google Meet. You’ll have the chance to pair with many members of our engineering team on real client problems that we’re solving that day.
Our Apprenticeship Hiring Timeline
- Monday, October 26, 9 AM CDT: Application period opens, code challenge released
- Sunday, November 1, 11:59 PM CST: Application period closes. Any applications or challenge submissions received after this time will not be considered.
- Monday, November 16 through Friday, December 4: Semi-finalist code challenge assessment interviews (conducted via Google Meet)
- Monday, December 7 through Tuesday, December 15: Finalist interviews (conducted via Google Meet)
- Late December: Offers made
- Monday, January 4: Start date for our new apprentice cohort
