What is Kotlin?

Kotlin is a programming language introduced by JetBrains in 2011.

Kotlin is free, has been free and will remain free. It is developed under the Apache 2.0 license. Google announced Kotlin is an official language for android development. Kotlin is an open-source programming language that combines object-oriented programming and functional features into a unique platform.

This is a strongly statically typed general-purpose programming language that runs on JVM. Kotlin is a modern programming language that makes developers happier.  easy to pick up, so you can create powerful applications immediately. Kotlin is influenced by other popular programming languages such as Java, C#, JavaScript, Scala and Groovy.

The syntax of Kotlin may not be exactly like Java Programming Language, however, internally Kotlin is reliant on the existing Java Class library to produce wonderful results for the programmers.

Kotlin provides interoperability, code safety, and clarity to the developers around the world.

Ensure to meet the following prerequisites to learn Kotlin efficiently:

When working with Kotlin, choosing an IDE over a source-code editor is a better option because the former will make it much easier for you to maintain complete control over your projects.

IntelliJ IDEA

Eclipse IDE

Android studio.

Here I have taken IntelliJ Idea to develop Kotlin program.

I have created sample Koltin program. Below are steps to create sample program.

First need to install IntelliJ Idea and JVM.

Open IntelliJ and click File -> New -> Project -> then follow the steps shown in the screen shots.

Then Select the Kotlin, fill the Project name and select the respective JDK. Here we can select either Gradel or Maven as per our understanding.

Once we click on next and then finish.

IntelliJ automatically creates the project structure.

This is main file to run the program.

We can do some changes and then run the file.

The output will be like this.

Kotlin Architecture

  • Kotlin is a programming language and has its own architecture to allocate memory and produce a quality output to the end user.
  • Following are the different scenarios where Kotlin compiler will work differently.
  • Compile Kotlin into bytecode which can run on JVM. This bytecode is exactly equal to the byte code generated by the Java .class file.
  • Whenever Kotlin targets JavaScript, the Kotlin compiler converts the. kt file into ES 5.1 and generates a compatible code for JavaScript.
  • Kotlin compiler can create platform basis compatible codes via LLVM.
  • Kotlin Multiplatform Mobile (KMM) enables developers to create multiplatform applications using Android and iOS code.

Features of Kotlin

  • Kotlin Application Development takes very less time for compilation, lightweight, and prevents applications from taking up more space.
  • The codes written in Kotlin are smaller in size, meaning that it will have fewer bugs and will make debugging faster.
  • Kotlin compiles bytecode that can be executed with JVM, so Java libraries and frameworks can be used in Kotlin projects.
  • A Kotlin script is used to configure Android Studio projects for auto-completion. It also reduces error detection time during compilation.
  • It is very much secure against NullPointerException.
  • Kotlin incorporates coroutines as well as interoperability with JavaScript for web development.

Most use full topics.

  • Data Class
  • Singleton
  • Coroutines
  • Scope Functions
  • Inline Functions
  • Dispatchers
  • Lazy and LateInit
