Scrum Inc. Is Honored to Sign
The Armed Forces Covenant

At Scrum Inc., empowering those who keep the world safe and free is more than a mission statement - it’s part of our DNA.

Our founder, Dr. Jeff Sutherland, is a combat veteran and a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Our workforce includes a significant number of veterans in both the United States and the United Kingdom. “We know those who serve their country deserve our respect, gratitude, and support,” says Scrum Inc. CEO JJ Sutherland, “We take pride in honoring that service and sacrifice.”

Scrum Inc. recently expanded its commitment to those who serve by signing the United Kingdom’s Armed Forces Covenant.

The Armed Forces Covenant is a formal commitment to those who serve and have served that they will be treated with fairness and respect, and a recognition of the valuable attributes they bring to the workplace.

As a ‘forces-friendly’ employer, Scrum Inc. will uphold the principles of the covenant by:

  • Supporting existing employees who choose to be members of the Reserve forces – accommodating their training and development wherever possible
  • Continuing to recruit from the community of veteran service personnel, both directly and through the Career Transition Partnership
  • Providing support for the spouses and partners of Service personnel, with employment and training opportunities

General Gwyn Jenkins CB OBE ADC, Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, noted Scrum Inc.'s signing of the Armed Forces Covenant, “Demonstrates Scrum Inc.’s continued committment to equal treatment for the men and women who serve in the military and their families.”

Colonel Peter Germain, Chief Executive of The Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association of Greater London added “When an organisation commits to signing the Armed Forces Covenant it speaks volumes about the value they attach to the skills, experience, and character that members of the Armed Forces community can bring to their organisation.” Colonel Germain then wished Scrum Inc., “The very best in their journey on the Employer Recognition Scheme.”

Katie Dodd, Defence Relationship Management Regional Employer Engagement Director at the Greater London Reserve Forces' and Cadets' Association, also welcomed Scrum Inc. to the growing list of almost 10,000 signatories of the Armed Forces Covenant.

“I am honored to make this commitment today,” noted JJ Sutherland at the signing ceremony which included General Gwyn Jenkins CB OBE ADC, Vice Chief of the Defence Staff. Sutherland added, “I am also proud that Scrum Inc. 's growing UK client base includes the Ministry of Defence, the Royal Navy, the British Army, and Strategic Command.”

Sutherland also thanked General Jenkins and the Defence Relationship Management team for helping us mark this commitment in such a meaningful way.

About the Armed Forces Covenant

The Armed Forces Covenant is a pledge made by the UK government, businesses, and society to ensure that members of the armed forces community - including their families - are treated with fairness and respect.

The Covenant was first introduced in 2011, and it outlines the moral obligation that the nation has towards those who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces. It sets out a range of commitments, including access to healthcare, housing, education, and employment opportunities.

The Covenant aims to ensure that members of the armed forces community are not disadvantaged in comparison to the general public, and it recognizes the sacrifices that service personnel and their families make on behalf of the nation. It also seeks to promote a greater understanding and awareness of the issues facing the armed forces community.

The Covenant is supported by a range of organizations, including local authorities, charities, and businesses. The program is regularly reviewed to ensure that it remains relevant and effective.

Scrum Inc.’s Ongoing Commitment

In addition to singing the Armed Forces Covenant, Scrum Inc. has achieved Bronze award status in the U.K. Government’s Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.

Bronze award recipients:

  • Pledge to support the armed forces, including existing or prospective employees who are members of the community
  • Promote being armed forces-friendly and are open to employing reservists, armed forces veterans (including the wounded, injured, and sick), cadet instructors, and military spouses/partners

“Veterans are a key part of our company globally and an integral part of our growth as an organization,” explains JJ Sutherland, “ In the UK some 75% of our employees are veterans. Their skills, mindset, and commitment are invaluable to us and our clients.”

With active engagements across much of the U.K.’s defense ecosystem, Scrum Inc. seeks to deepen our contribution and enrich our relationships. We look forward to becoming a registered provider in the Enhanced Learning Credit scheme and supporting the skills development of the Armed Forces Community.

Here in the United States, Scrum Inc. is a proud partner of SkillBridge, a US Department of Defense program that helps active-duty members gain valuable civilian work experience through specific industry training, apprenticeships, or internships during the last 180 days of service.
