New for Agile2022: The Hobby Hall!

Hello, my name is Greg, and I’m a serial hobbyist. I’m looking forward to being your guide for Hobby Hall, a new element at this year’s Agile2022 conference in Nashville.

Bring your hobbies! Bring your avocations! Bring out your arts and crafts! Show us your scholarly pursuits! We’re all so much more than what we do at work. Hobby Hall is a place where we Agilists can showcase, geek out together, and share with each other all the things that fill our cups outside of Agile.

If you have a (conference-appropriate) passion to share, make some space in your bag, bring it with you, and come hang out in Hobby Hall! If your hobby doesn’t fit on an airplane, join us anyway to tell us all about it.

When and where

We’ll be open as a drop-in lounge daily 8:30 am – 6 pm (noon on Friday). In addition, we will have 2-3 scheduled sessions (which will not conflict with any keynotes or featured sessions) each day where you can demonstrate, learn, or just browse. Stop in between 8:30 am and 9 am to sign up for a teaching space; tables will be available first-come-first-served, but even if we run out of space, we’ll do our best to shove over and make room for you.

What are you likely to see at Hobby Hall?

Music and dance, fiber and textile arts, drawing and painting, creative writing, photography, puzzles, toys and building, electronics, amateur radio, and academic subjects are just a few ideas we’re hoping for. Games and gaming are welcome in Hobby Hall and also in our conference’s two(!) dedicated game rooms.

I can tell you for sure that I’ll be showing off some of my twisty puzzle collection and will be available to teach you to solve a Rubik’s Cube or a Rubik’s Revenge. And I’m sure our program chair, Cheryl, will want to teach everybody about genealogical research. I hear tell she’s also interested in learning to knit.

I’m planning to indulge one of my other hobbies, videography, in your service–we’ll have a conference “confessional booth” á la The Great British Bake-Off (or the Amazing Race, if you prefer) where you can record your thoughts on the conference, and we’ll edit them into a very professional montage. Why? As with all hobbies–because we can.

Keep it appropriate

All Hobby Hall activities must be Code of Conduct compliant (no nudity or sexualized content in any form), and the items you bring must be safe (no weapons, nothing flammable or toxic) and legal in Tennessee (leave your cannabis at home). Please plan to protect the furnishings and do your own cleanup if your hobby might leave a mess. As always, if you think Hobby Hall might be right for you, talk to your doctor. Your mileage may vary; past performance does not indicate future gains; void where prohibited; doll does not speak.

We can’t wait to see how you inspire us!

Greg Martin

Greg Martin (he/him/they/them) has been trying to figure out why people are the way they are for the last half century or so. He was accidentally exposed to the Agile Manifesto in about 2003, whereupon he immediately dismissed it as a new name for stuff we already knew. A few years later, somebody smarter than he explained it to him, and he saw the value. He’s been trying to explain it to other people ever…
