Critical Data to Consider When Moving to the Public Cloud

By Jon Emery, Director of Solution Engineering, CloudSphere

In a world where modern businesses run on a variety of different server models, moving your IT estate to the public cloud is not a standardized process. To reduce your risk and make the best choice for your organization, there are some very important things to consider before moving your database in any way.

In this article, we’ll cover the critical data points you should look at before you move to the public cloud, important questions to ask, as well as what data CloudSphere helps you collect.

The Data You Need to Optimize Your Move

Before moving to the public cloud, there are certain data points that you should gather to inform your decisions and help reduce your risk when migrating your IT estate.

CloudSphere’s platform allows you to collect the data you need to make the best choices for your organization. This is a crucial step in moving to the public cloud, as there are different technologies and platforms that companies should leverage for different use cases.

5 Critical Data Points to Evaluate

If you’re thinking about moving to a hosted database model, you need to know as much information as possible at that granular level. Data points like the following are particularly critical to look out for:

  1. The size of each individual database.
  2. The CPU uptime of the database(s).
  3. The IO count that you are collecting.
  4. Identifying if you are looking at a managed instance.
  5. Determining what you’ll use as your SQL databases.

5 Questions to Ask When Collecting Your Data

When you review all of the data points you’ve collected, such as the instance level, you should also consider things like your services enabled.

Here are five questions to ask at this point in your data collection to inform your move:

  1. Are we collecting analysis services?
  2. Are these analysis services clustered?
  3. Do we have an active or passive setup?
  4. How do we want to approach this setup?
  5. How do we want to re-platform it?

What Data Does CloudSphere Help You Uncover?

With the CloudSphere platform you can automatically collect very granular and detailed data all in one central place.

For example, our platform enables you to uncover elevated data points around an SQL server. Within your user dashboard, you can then drill down into that specific SQL instance and see what it’s running on top of. With CloudSphere you can also identify additional data points on other existing and future vendors.

Those using AWS can also leverage data discovery and efficiencies with products like CloudSphere’s Cloud Quick Assessment, available on AWS Marketplace. Cloud Quick Assessment allows users access to CloudSphere’s optimization and modernization framework, which uses the collection of data to produce prioritized recommendations for right-sizing, reclamation, modernization, and performance.
