Cloud computing and the return of the platform wars | Enterprise Web 2.0 | ZDNet.com. Cloud computing is arriving on the scene in a big way this year and the next platform wars have begun. Sun's move to offer service using Amazon's APIs shows that there is some early coalescing around de facto interoperability. The big question is whether businesses will go after what is sizing up to be a $42 billion dollar industry by 2012.

SailPoint Simplifies the Process of Buying and Deploying Identity Management

Sailpoint

Last week, Burton Group analyst Lori Rowland wrote about how the weakened economy has been good for identity management technologies. I agree with Lori – the churn created by the recession has heightened the need for companies to proactively manage risk associated with user access controls. Compliance and identity governance are more important than ever.

Showtime!

Steve Farber

Well…it’s finally here. The publication date for Greater Than Yourself (Tuesday). I’m thrilled, of course, but also anxious to see how the book’s received. (Releasing a book is a major OS!M ). GreaterThanYourself.com just went live this morning, and I think we’ve built something very rich and provocative. Please go on over and spend some time watching the videos (it would take you over an hour to watch all of them, but we’ve put them in bite-sized bits).

Peak Performance: Continuous Testing & Evaluation of LLM-Based Applications

Speaker: Aarushi Kansal, AI Leader & Author and Tony Karrer, Founder & CTO at Aggregage

Software leaders who are building applications based on Large Language Models (LLMs) often find it a challenge to achieve reliability. It’s no surprise given the non-deterministic nature of LLMs. To effectively create reliable LLM-based (often with RAG) applications, extensive testing and evaluation processes are crucial. This often ends up involving meticulous adjustments to prompts.

Now serving - Message Queuing in Web Applications

Ruminations of a Programmer

Looks like asynchronous messaging is becoming quite a common paradigm of distribution in Web applications and large Web sites. The general theory is to do the absolutely essential user requirement stuff as part of the synchronous HTTP request/response cycle. And delegate the rest offline for the asynchronous queuing service to process. This leads to faster page reloads, optimal resource utilization and much better user experience.

Mind the Competence Inversion

Recently, an iGoogle “quote of the day” made me stop and think. Usually, I read the quotes, smirk, and move on. But this one was different: Technology is dominated by two types of people: those who understand what they do not manage, and those who manage what they do not understand. — Archibald Putt (a pseudonym). It turns out this quote is known as Putt’s Law and was first published in Research/Development magazine in 1976 (yes, before my time in high tech).

Top 5 Challenges in Designing a Data Warehouse for Multi-Tenant Analytics

Multi-tenant architecture allows software vendors to realize tremendous efficiencies by maintaining a single application stack instead of separate database instances while meeting data privacy needs. When you use a data warehouse to power your multi-tenant analytics, the proper approach is vital. Multi-tenant analytics is NOT the primary use case with traditional data warehouses, causing data security challenges.

The Agile PMO: Automating Metrics Capture

The Agile Manager

The last piece of the Agile PMO puzzle is to make the data needs of the PMO non-burdensome to delivery teams. It’s all well and good to be able to get quality and performance data, but it has to be easily accessible. If it isn't, we're just taxing the teams that much more. That means we won't get this data timely or efficiently, if at all. Automating Metrics Capture Because they're derived directly from the asset under development, our metrics give us an objective way to index and monitor qualit

To their culture, their work ethic, their camaraderie. When necessary, Ken told me, they would band together and work hard–10 to 20 hours a day at times–to solve a problem or meet a pressing need.

Web programming at a higher level of abstraction

Ruminations of a Programmer

Frameworks like Sproutcore , Cappuccino and Objective-J have given the Web programming model a huge leap. Till date one of the pet peeves of Web programmers had been the fact that the programming model was based on the native DOM and the associated accidental complexities that HTML, Javascript and CSS brought forth. The crux of the problem was not the polyglotism involved in Web development, but all these technologies were often found to be competitive with overlapping responsibilities.
