That was my mantra in 2015 and beyond. As we start a new year, I revisited this mantra and a few additional thoughts came to the fore. Consume Less. Consumption is a critical element in one’s ability to create anything. So, consumption, by itself, is not all that bad. The problem of our times is consumption by default. We first consume and then think if we really needed it.

Earlier this year, my house should have burned to the ground. A CR2032 battery exploded and caught fire in a confined place dense with flammable objects. But my house didn't burn down: at the moment the battery exploded, I was sitting a few feet away from it. I heard a loud bang, investigated, and stamped out the fire within a few seconds. I wasn't planning to be there at the time.

Multi-tenant architecture allows software vendors to realize tremendous efficiencies by maintaining a single application stack instead of separate database instances while meeting data privacy needs. When you use a data warehouse to power your multi-tenant analytics, the proper approach is vital. Multi-tenant analytics is NOT the primary use case with traditional data warehouses, causing data security challenges.

Developers sometimes run into tasks that require access to email mailboxes. In most cases, this is done using the Internet Message Access Protocol, or IMAP. As a PHP developer, I first turned to PHP's built in IMAP library, but this library is buggy and impossible to debug or modify. So today we will create a working IMAP email client from the ground up using PHP.

The Hortonworks DataFlow is designed to meet the practical challenges of collecting and moving data securely and efficiently. Early last year when I left Spotify I decided to do more reading. I was planning to read at least one book per week and in particular I wanted to brush up on management, economics, and technology. 2015 was also a year of exclusively non-fiction, which is a pretty drastic shift, since I grew up reading fiction compulsively for 20 years. My goal for 2015 failed – I ended up reading about 40 books last year.
