This was posted on the Twitter Engineering blog a few days ago: Dimension Independent Similarity Computation (DISCO). I just glanced at the paper, and there’s some cool stuff going on from a theoretical perspective. What I’m curious about is why they didn’t decide to use dimensionality reduction to solve such a big problem. The benefit of this approach is that it scales much better (linear in input data size) and produces much better results.

The late Stephen Covey was fond of saying, “You can’t talk yourself out of a problem you behaved yourself into.” He definitely had a way with a phrase. I’ve been thinking about Covey’s line lately because I’ve been teaching leadership coaching to students at Georgetown and to executives in a few different companies in the past month. One of the things we’ve been talking about is establishing behavioral practices that lead to more effective leadership.

Each year TeamViewer conducts a survey of American telecommuters to identify the benefits of telecommuting as well as the unique demands that come with working remotely. However, the benefits to employees can also be benefits to employers. I once read a story of a boy who found a bag full of dried clay balls when he was playing in the field. Not sure about what to do with them, he started throwing them in the pond to enjoy the ripples.
