'At Verizon, January always brought a flurry of kickoff activities where the sentiment was 90% forward focus. Auditoriums around the country would resound with a consistent message, “Last year is over… no time to spend there, we’ve got game-changing work to do.” I’m all for a 2015 fast start. In fact, I’m looking forward to the strategy work I’ll be doing with teams across a variety of industries this January.

'I always appreciate this time of year because a new year is approaching, which gives us a chance to reflect on our leadership over the past 360+ days, and make important resolutions for improvement in the future. While many of these resolutions will focus on the words we need to use (both in speech and on paper) to be better leaders, I’d ask you to think today about the other, more subtle messages that we send every day through our actions (or inactions) in the workplace.

I just made it to Sweden suffering from jet lag induced insomnia, but this blog post will not cover that. Instead, I will talk a little bit about technical debt. The concept of technical debt always resonated with me, partly because I always like the analogy with “real” debt. If you take the analogy really far, there are some curious implications. I always like to think of the “interest rate” of software development.

Software leaders who are building applications based on Large Language Models (LLMs) often find it a challenge to achieve reliability. I look forward to 2015 as the year when randomized algorithms, probabilistic techniques and data structures become more pervasive and mainstream. The primary driving factors for this will be more and more prevalence of big data and the necessity to process them in near real time using minimal (or constant) memory bandwidth. You are given data streams where possibly you will see every data only once in your lifetime and you need to churn out analytics from them in real time.
