For the last 10 months I’ve been an investor in the Oregon Angel Fund (OAF). We invest in startups and early-stage growth companies in the Pacific Northwest, and as you can imagine, we hear a lot of pitches. Because there are many interested companies and applicants, and only a small number of actual annual investments (just a handful), that first 3 minute summation of “ why you should invest in us ” is absolutely critical.

Others become managers after getting a management degree from a b-school that never taught them the fundamentals of dealing with people. They end up putting off people through their behavior and set a wrong example for their subordinates to follow. In a business setting, the cost of having such leaders is invisible, but often huge.

Since I moved to Portland about 16 months ago, I’ve hung out with a lot of entrepreneurs, in coffee shops all over town. (Yes, here I spread my coffee dollars around between the national chains and the local brews). All of them have body gestures, word choices, and tones that get under my skin because I see them as rude, impatient, inconsiderate or pushy.
