Agile in education: students buying into their own learning

The following post is about an Agile Alliance-sponsored non-profit event. You can see all our sponsored community events here.

As a part of the Agile for Humanity 2022 Virtual Conference, one panel should be especially interesting to educators, students, and anyone interested in learning about Agile in education.

Agile educators use adaptive skills to introduce students to 21st-century skills that will enable participation in the future of work. The future of work is an uncertain frontier that is heavily influenced by the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and COVID-19. The 4IR is driven by the fusion of technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and biotechnology. The COVID-19 pandemic certainly changed how work is done, and knowledge workers were moved into remote work. The unintended consequences of the new remote work style are unknown. We have many things to consider for the future of work.

Dr. Charles Collingwood, Math department chair at Sahuaro High School, adapted the 5 Saturdays career development, Agile, and entrepreneurship courses in 2020-21 to help his students gain a sense of workforce development skills to participate in the future of work. Many students said, “This is the first time I’m taking a class that really counts for something.” In the Fall of 2020, we established a plan to create an environment where kids could buy into their own learning, and Agile seemed to offer that opportunity. In the second semester, Spring of 2021, students went through the entrepreneur process as we did in the 5 Saturdays summer program and came up with an end-product. In short, we provided skills that enabled the students to learn how to be entrepreneurs.

The panelist on Saturday, February 26, 2022, will include Dr. David Martinez (Early College High School, Costa Mesa), Yolanda Payne (Georgia Tech), Angela Marquez (University of Arizona – Data Sciences Academy), John Miller (Agile Classroom), Dr. Charles Collingwood (Sahuaro High), Dr. Dave Cornelius (5 Saturdays and Go Agile Edu) and many more.

Join Dr. Charles Collingwood on Saturday, February 26, 2022, with a panel of Agile Educators for an experience of Belonging that everyone can participate in sharing and learning together.
