Urban Institute Enacts Real Social and Policy Change Using Data

The Education Data Portal

Imagine you’re the superintendent of a school district and you discover that your district has a problem with bullying.

How do you go about enacting an informed policy that will help stem that problem? Where would you find the data to support your decision? Even if you could collect all the data around bullying incidents in the district over the past several years, do you have the time and knowledge to analyze that data? What about being able to compare those findings to other districts with similar problems?

The Education Data Portal

To make better-informed decisions regarding our Nation’s schools, the Urban Institute built the Education Data Portal. They partnered with Cloudera to help process and aggregate over 30 years of data sets, collected from dozens of sources. The portal gives educators and policy makers access to all that data, and allows them to generate accurate and actionable insights with that data to enact real policy and social change.

As a nonprofit, independent, nonpartisan research organization, the Urban Institute exists to help our governing bodies make better and more informed policies and laws. Over the past 50 years, they have grown to cover pretty much every aspect of the U.S. domestic economic and social policy. And the Education Data Portal is just one of the ways the Urban Institute uses  data to keep informed policy moving.
