Throughout my career at Textron, I have had many roles, spanning supply chain, manufacturing, integrated product teams, and working on helicopter programs. That then led to an increasing involvement of trying to move data across the enterprise to compare manufacturing operations around the world.

At least a few will have to resort to making changes in the cloud console or CLI, causing drift. Drift is when your IaC state, or configurations in code, differs from your cloud state, or configurations of running resources. However, my favorite way to learn is missing from the list — learning by doing.

When I drift away from the positive leadership practices we dedicate our lives to sharing with the world, it’s almost always because I’m not leading myself. I end every episode of my podcast by inviting you to “Be the leader you’d want your boss to be.”. This is a leadership relationship I often overlook. In short, you can’t.

Why do I think this? Machine learning models trained on 2019 data didn’t know what to do. With Continuous AI, you can create multiple MLOps retraining strategies to refresh your production models based on the schedule of your choosing—like when accuracy drops below a predetermined threshold or data drift occurs.

This post will expand on this messiness and why Honeycomb favors an iterative approach to setting our alerts. Good alerting hygiene consists of a few components: chasing down alert conditions, reflecting on incidents, and thinking of what makes a signal good or bad. Therefore, we fully trust our alerts.

My customers have asked me what they should do to address this. Underspecification refers to machine learning models that do not contain enough information to perform well on new unseen data. Underspecified models give us the illusion of good predictive accuracy when we evaluate them on their training data. Explainability.

I’ll see if I can define my usage a little more precisely. But if some cogs can be mapped in different ways, or some cogs cannot be mapped at all, then the software solution will drift away from reality and people will see this as bugs. When I discuss software issues, I often use the term ‘context’. There are only two states.
