Python stretches lead in language popularity index

Python increased its lead over second-place C language in the March 2024 edition of the Tiobe index of programming language popularity.

Python has its largest lead ever in Tiobe’s monthly index of programming language popularity, having jumped ahead of second-place C language by nearly 4.5 percentage points.

Published yesterday, the Tiobe Programming Community Index of language popularity for March 2024 saw Python once again leading the index that C and Java once dominated. Python first topped the Tiobe index in October 2021. Elsewhere in the index, Scratch re-entered the top 10 and Rust climbed to 17th. Rust was 19th one year ago.

The Tiobe index ranks programming languages based on the number of engineers, courses, and third-party vendors, which are measured using Google, Amazon, Wikipedia, Bing, and other websites.

The Tiobe index’s top 10 languages in March 2024:

  1. Python, with a 15.63% rating.
  2. C, 11.17%
  3. C++, 10.7%
  4. Java, 8.95%
  5. C#, 7.54%
  6. JavaScript, 3.38%
  7. SQL, 1.92%
  8. Go, 1.56%
  9. Scratch, 1.46%
  10. Visual Basic, 1.42%

The rival Pypl Popularity of Programming Language Index assesses ranks languages based on how often language tutorials are searched in Google. The Pypl index’s top 10 for March 2024:

  1. Python, a 28.59% share
  2. Java, 15.79%
  3. JavaScript, 8.7%
  4. C#, 6.77%
  5. C/C++, 6.76%
  6. R, 4.71%
  7. PHP, 4.5%
  8. TypeScript, 2.86%
  9. Swift, 2.74%
  10. Objective-C, 2.4%
