It is useful (and fun) for the development team to brainstorm creative ways to game the metrics, and think about the unintended side-effects this might have. The PM just needs to gather the team and ask “Let’s think about how to abuse the pickup time metric.” Take any social media company that sells advertisements.

I didn’t know much about machine learning research, and he didn’t know much about engineering and team building, but we were each impressed with the others’ accomplishments and wanted to learn from each other.
