Windows actually got good for web developers. WSL lets you run a real Linux distribution natively, so you can use the same package manager that you’ll deploy against. That $3,200 M3 Max MacBook can in fact be beat by a $2,349 Dell XPS in the tests that are likely to matter to most web developers. I’m kinda shocked.

It's amazing, and it's how I'm feeling about Linux right now. I felt the same way about the Mac back in 2001. Take web development. That feeling of realizing that something is simply better, and the only reason it hasn't taken off yet is because the world hasn't realized it. And Ruby in 2003.

Before that, cloud computing itself took off in roughly 2010 (AWS was founded in 2006); and Agile goes back to 2000 (the Agile Manifesto dates back to 2001, Extreme Programming to 1999). The web is over 30 years old; the Netscape browser appeared in 1994, and it wasn’t the first. 2023 was one of those rare disruptive years.

We also suspect (but don’t know) that C++ is becoming more widely used to develop microservices. On the other hand, while C has traditionally been the language of tool developers (all of the Unix and Linux utilities are written in C), that role may have moved on to newer languages like Go and Rust. Go and Rust continue to grow.
