No release window timed to your sprint (because, spoiler, there are no sprints)! And while I concede there is no VCS branching model that fits all teams, I am happy to have learned that the option CircleCI chose exists, and to have experienced how it affects our delivery cadence, and the engineering culture we build around our product.

It is not ok for heartbeats to be a special case, constrained to tightly controlled windows. Our existing deploy tooling and engineering culture made the transition to remote work go much more smoothly. It is not normal, it is not necessary, it is costly as f**k. It is not ok and you should want better.

So, then we get pulled into a post-mortem at SEV3 and we go and we find this team had had problems in this one second window and two other jobs failed to launch. So that’s like a rolling three-week window or something. It’ll be close enough. We ran some tests that look good. Ramin: We’re like, okay. Larry: Right.

Our exec team works to mitigate this by providing a window into the strategy creation process and cascading context about team discussions to our ICs and especially our managers, but it takes ongoing effort and there’s always room to get better. Managing and making management visible turn out to be two mostly distinct groups of skills.
