We'd done a lot of brain work in the morning, had an in-depth discussion with a senior exec over lunch and were getting ready for more coaching and brain work in the afternoon. Leadership is a full-contact sport, and if you cannot address conflict in a healthy, productive fashion then you should not be in a leadership role. This is such a common problem for executives that I coach. When I was in seminary (twice: master degree and doctoral degree) I received no formal training in dealing with conflict.

Real life is not a spectator sport – it’s a participation sport, and in fact, I submit to you that it’s a full contact participation sport. I blame poor real world training. When black & white becomes permanently blurred so that everything reads as shades of grey, things can become dicey.

One of the reasons I have always loved high school wrestling as a sport is that a competitor lives and dies on his or her own merits… yes… females are becoming more prevalent in High School wrestling. One of the aspects of the sport that has always attracted me is that when you lose there is no one else to blame. Pretty simple.

If your mentoring and training programs don’t focus on the development of action oriented leaders then you are simply breeding obselesence, and utlimately…failure. Remember that leadership is not a spectator sport. A critical part of the talent management life-cycle is leadership development.

There’s a wide variety of help available: occasional mentoring; training; help with process design and implementation; and full-time (or near-full-time) coaching. The most effective help you can get is to hire experienced practitioners to coach each team full-time. The same goes when hiring consultants and coaches.
