Be My Eyes, which lets blind and low vision folks ask sighted people to describe what their phone sees, is getting a “virtual volunteer” that offers AI-powered help at any time.

When I moved to San Francisco, the quirky rotunda at 532 Market Street was a Sharper Image store full of plasma balls and tourists trying out massage chairs. The ETrade branch that took over the space closed a few years ago, but last August, it got a new tenant: Silicon Valley Bank. Sigh. Alongside GPT-4 , OpenAI has open sourced a software framework to evaluate the performance of its AI models. Called Evals , OpenAI says that the tooling will allow anyone to report shortcomings in its models to help guide improvements. Medwing , a European startup building a recruitment marketplace for healthcare workers, has raised €44 million ($47 million) in a Series C round of funding. Founded out of Berlin in 2017, Medwing targets the healthcare industry in Germany and the U.K. with a platform designed to match hospitals and clinics with nurses and elderly caregivers, though it also caters to pharmacists, midwives, doctors, and similar professionals.

OpenAI has built a version of GPT-4 , its latest text-generating model, that can “remember” roughly 50 pages of content thanks to a greatly expanded context window. That might not sound significant. But it’s five times as much information as the vanilla GPT-4 can hold in its “memory” and eight times as much as GPT-3. “The model is able to flexibly use long documents,” Greg Brockman, OpenAI co-founder and president, said during a live demo this afternoon.
